Of the final generation Volvo V70/XC70?
Step dad is looking to replace his Suzuki Forenza wagon in January/February. He has expressed interest in Volvo wagons and Subaru Foresters, also somewhat the Outback. His main main concern is that whatever he gets can haul all of his drum kit and other instruments, so wagon or mid size crossovers.
So I come to you, Oppo hivemind. I know little of Volvos other than that I like them and want a C30 and/or Polestar something for myself. What are common issues that V70s and their derivations face, anything I should totally steer him away from?
V70 above for your time.

My dad has a current-gen XC70. It’s been great for him. The only issue he’s had is the Volvo badge falling off.

I don’t know what the budget in mind is.. But if you can, get a very recent XC70 with a CPO warranty. That warranty could cover a lot of piece of mind for a while if the budget allows.
My P80 V70R sucked. But it was abused and I’m pretty sure they aren’t all like mine.

That's covered under a recall they will put a new one on no cost

The Forenza isn’t a real Suzuki; it’s a Daewoo piece of shit. The SX4 is good, and is a real Japanese Suzuki.
Of course, there is the Matrix/Vibe.
Not sure what his budget is or other requirements, but there is the Focus wagon.
perhaps the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo might work for him?
Another good choice is the Hyundai Elantra Touring

Yep.
They replaced the one on dad’s S as soon as it started peeling.

My dad had two 2nd gen V70s in relatively similar spec, a fairly early one (2002) and a later (2006) facelift model. The main difference between them apart from cosmetic stuff were that the later one had the terrible Volvo satnav and a 6-speed automatic instead of the 5-speed manual the older one had. I don’t recall the manual one ever going wrong whatsoever over five years, while the automatic one had all kinds of issues over the two years he owned it. However this is probably of little use to you as the two cars were equipped with the euro only 2.4 D5 engine. From personal experience I would say a sensible V70 (aka sans turbo) of this generation should be pretty undramatic if maintained well, but I assume this is also the case with most of the other options.

The SX4 is also a pretty little hungarian Fiat

Undramatic, space for hauling, and good for commuting is all he really needs. The most it’ll be on the road at any time is about two hours every so often. The brand new Traverse is for family hauling and long trips, so sensible is the need.

The Forenza has been decent so we don’t particularly like or dislike it, the thing works.
He would prefer something at least midsize so most of those are out and doesn’t want a van. Smallest he’s looked at is an Acura TSX and Suabru Forester.

Gotcha, not sure how set on AWD he is. Budget is preferably payments of sub $300 a month so probably looking at base model CPO XC70 if pretty new.

Easy fix.

What is the budget?

Around 20k max, he’d like to keep monthly payments around $250 USD.

it’s also the best Fiat ever made.

The TSX is awesome if it’s in budget. Is it possible to get a decent CTS wagon under 20k? There’s also the Magnum.
Perhaps he could get a CPO CRV.

He doesn't like the looks of the Caddy and no RWD anyway. Crv is an option...
